Which pump do I need for my hot tub?

Welke pomp heb ik nodig voor mijn jacuzzi? All4Spas

The right pump for your hot tub depends on two things: what you need it for and the specifications that suit your spa. A circulation pump (0.35-0.5 HP, from approximately €189) keeps the water moving and supports the heating and filtration. A massage pump (2-3 HP, from approximately €296) drives the powerful jets for the massage. Most spas have at least one of each type, and All4Spas can be found both in the Waterway and LX brands.

In this article, we explain the different types of hot tub pumps available, how to determine which pump you need, and what to consider when choosing a replacement.

Two types of pumps, two functions

Every spa has at least one pump, but most models have two or more. It's important to understand which pump performs which function, as they are not interchangeable.

The circulation pump is the silent workhorse of your spa. This pump runs continuously or for extended periods throughout the day, ensuring the water flows through the filter and heater. Without a circulation pump, the water is neither heated nor filtered. Circulation pumps are low-powered (0.35-0.5 HP), consume little electricity (approx. 250 watts), and are designed to be quiet. Popular models include the LX WTC50M (0.35 HP) and the JA100 (0.5 HP).

The massage pump is the powerful pump that powers the jets. This pump only turns on when you activate the massage and provides the water pressure you feel in the jets. Massage pumps have a significantly higher power output (2-3 HP) and a higher power consumption (1,500-2,200 watts). Larger spas with many jets sometimes have two or even three massage pumps. The most popular models are the LX WP200-II (2.0 HP, two speed) and the LP300 (3.0 HP, one speed).

There are also two-speed pumps that combine both functions. At low speed, they provide circulation, while at high speed, they provide massage. The WP series from LX is a good example. This type is often used in more compact spas where space is limited.

Waterway or LX: Which brand to choose?

In the spa world, you'll encounter two big names: Waterway and LX (also known as Lingxiao or Lingchao). Waterway is the American premium brand that has been the standard in virtually every spa for years. The pumps are still produced in America and are known for their reliability and durability.

LX is the Chinese alternative that has captured a huge market share over the past decade. And for good reason: LX pumps offer the same specifications, the same wattage, and in most cases, fit directly onto the existing Waterway pump connection. The Jacuzzi brand itself, for example, uses LX pumps in its original spas. The main difference is the price—LX pumps are often 20-30% more affordable than their Waterway equivalents.

Bee All4Spas Both brands are in stock. If you want to keep an original Waterway pump, you can. But if you want the same performance at a lower price, an LX pump is an excellent choice. In many cases, switching from Waterway to LX is a direct, one-to-one replacement without any modifications.

How do you determine which pump you need?

If you want to replace your pump, there are three things you need to check before ordering: the power, the connection size, and the number of speeds.

The horsepower (HP) is listed on the label or nameplate of your current pump. This number should match the replacement pump. A pump that is too weak won't provide enough pressure to the jets; a pump that is too powerful can overload the lines and connections. If you can no longer read the nameplate, note the model number and contact us. All4Spas for advice.

The connection size is the second crucial factor. Spa pumps typically have either a 1.5-inch or 2-inch connection. Most massage pumps use 2-inch connections, while some older circulation pumps have 1.5-inch connections. Measure the inside diameter of the pipe connection or check the nameplate.

Finally, the number of speeds. A single-speed pump has two wires (plus ground). A dual-speed pump has three wires (plus ground): one for low, one for high, and a common wire. This should match the wiring in your spa. Always replace single-speed with single-speed and dual-speed with dual-speed unless you're adjusting the controller.

Self-replacement: how does it work?

Replacing a hot tub pump is easy to do yourself with basic tools and a little technical knowledge. The average replacement time is 30-60 minutes. Make sure you do the following in the correct order.

First, turn off the power at the fuse box—not just the control panel, but also the residual current device (GFCI). Close the gate valves on either side of the pump to prevent water from leaking out. If you don't have gate valves, you'll first need to drain the spa below the pump level. Then, disconnect the electrical wiring (take a photo of the connections before disconnecting), loosen the hose couplings, and remove the old pump.

Install the new pump in the reverse order: connect the pipes and tighten them by hand (never use excessive force on plastic coupling nuts), connect the wiring as shown in the photo, open the shutoff valves, and check for leaks. Only then turn the power back on. Run the pump at low speed for a few minutes and check all connections for leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pump do I need for my hot tub?
That depends on the function. A circulation pump (0.35-0.5 HP) provides filtration and heating. A massage pump (2-3 HP) controls the jets. Check the power, connection size (1.5 or 2 inches), and speed range of your current pump. If in doubt, call All4Spas for free advice.
What is the difference between a Waterway and LX pump?
Waterway is the American premium brand, LX (Lingxiao) the Chinese alternative. LX pumps offer the same specifications and often fit directly onto a Waterway connection, but are 20-30% less expensive. Even the Jacuzzi brand uses LX pumps in their original spas.
Can I replace my jacuzzi pump myself?
Yes. Turn off the power at the fuse box, close the shutoff valves, take a picture of the wiring, remove the old pump, and install the new one. With basic tools, it takes 30-60 minutes. Always check for leaks before turning the power back on.
How long does a hot tub pump last?
A circulation pump lasts an average of 5-8 years, a massage pump 7-10 years. Signs of wear and tear include a loud humming noise, reduced jet pressure, a leak at the shaft seal, or a pump that no longer starts. Replace the pump seal at the first sign of leakage to prevent water damage.
